GSLC Terms and Officer Elections
Graduate Student Leadership Committee Student Representatives
Each Regional Chapter, Specialty Section, and Special Interest Group maintains their own mechanism for selecting their representatives and determining the length of terms, although generally they range from one to three years. The expected duties of the student representative will vary at the local level. However, the Graduate Student Leadership Committee (GSLC) serves as an independent body to SOT and maintain its own guidelines, responsibilities, and activities. In this dual role, the student representative acts as a liaison between their component group and the national SOT.
The GSLC is made up of three subcommittees, and all student representatives will be assigned to one of the subcommittees. For complete information on the GSLC and Subcommittees, visit the GSLC Who We Are section.
The official GSLC term follows the SOT officer year from May 1 to Apri 30l. This committee term is adhered to regardless of the individual component group appointment process/term. A representative must be a student member of SOT. No two graduate students from the same laboratory (i.e., same lab and same advisor) will be allowed to receive travel funding from the component group they represent and SOT.
As part of the GSLC (and its Subcommittees), representatives are expected to participate in meetings and conference calls, organization of Graduate Student activities, and attend the SOT Annual Meeting. The GSLC meets several times a year via teleconference, and in-person at the Annual Meeting. Opportunities are also available annually for GSLC representatives to serve as student liaisons to a national SOT Committee. GSLC Officers and the GSLC Executive Board
Eight individuals (GSLC Chair, GSLC Secretary, Communications Subcommittee Chair and Secretary, Professional Development Subcommittee Chair and Secretary, and Programming Subcommittee Chair and Secretary) will be elected every year for a one year term from May 1–April 30. For all positions, candidates will prepare a narrative statement including a brief biographical sketch and reasons why the candidate would like to hold that particular office. These statements will be submitted to the GSLC Chair by February 15, to be posted on ToXchange for GSLC Student Representatives review before the election at the Annual Meeting.
With the exception of the GSLC Chair, the GSLC members are eligible to be elected to the GSLC Executive Board after one year of GSLC service All officer terms are one year and follow the SOT officer year from May1 to April 30. The GSLC Chair must have served on the GSLC Executive Board in the previous year, and is elected by the current Executive Board. The GSLC Chair, as well as the three Subcommittee Chairs, must relinquish their component group representative position during their leadership year. The GSLC Secretary and three Subcommittee Secretaries may remain Graduate Student Representatives for their respective RC, SIG or SS. The Subcommittee Secretaries are considered officers; however, they are not members of the GSLC Executive Board. For a full description of the duties related to GSLC Officer positions, please refer to the GSLC Guidance Document .
