How to Get Involved
The Society of Toxicology recognizes that the future of the science lies with the students of today. The Graduate Student Leadership Committee (GSLC) is committed to increasing the professional development of graduate students through networking, scientific programs, and other SOT activities. Read more about student activities and events.
The GSLC is formed by one student representative from each component group. The GSLC Executive Board is the governing body that oversees the activities of the three GSLC Subcommittees, and is formed by the elected officers (GSLC Chair, GSLC Secretary, and three Subcommittee Chairs). Read more information on elected officer positions.
How Do I Become A Student Representative?
Each Regional Chapter, Special Interest Group, and Specialty Section may appoint one student representative who is officially recognized by SOT and participates in the GSLC. Each RC, SIG, and SS determines its own officers, by-laws, and methods of operation. As such, each component group chooses how to select their student representative, what the terms of service will be, and the expected duties. If you are interested in becoming a student representative, please contact your RC, SIG, or SS leadership to find out how.
*Note: SOT policy is that a graduate student serves as representative to only ONE component group during a term, in order to encourage broader involvement by the student membership. For the same reason, no two graduate students from the same laboratory (i.e., same lab and same advisor) will receive graduate representative travel funding in one year.
If your RC, SS, or SIG has already appointed a student representative, please contact him or her to find out how you can get involved. SOT and the GSLC are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers and would be happy to discuss ideas with you!
What Does A Student Representative Do?
Each Regional Chapter, Specialty Section, and Special Interest Group will vary in the terms of service and expected duties for their representative at the local level. However, the GSLC serves as an independent body to SOT and maintain their own guidelines, responsibilities, and activities. In this dual role, the student representative acts as a liaison between their component group and the national SOT. Student representatives are leaders in their local component group and are encouraged to facilitate communication between their component group and SOT as it relates to student issues, bring attention to student services and needs, and work to increase membership and involvement on both the local and national level. As part of the GSLC (and its Subcommittees), representatives are expected to participate in meetings and conference calls, organization of GSLC activities, and attend the SOT Annual Meeting. View more detailed information on GSLC and its Subcomittees.
SOT Member Benefits and Criteria
Only current members of SOT are eligible to serve as a graduate student representative. If you are not yet a member of SOT, we recommend that you join now. Please note that as a student member of SOT, your first annual membership in any Specialty Section or Special Interest Group is FREE!
