GSLC Activities and Events
GSLC/PDA Scientific Sessions
GSLC collaborated with the Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) to develop the symposium titled Developmental Exposure to Environmental Toxicants: From Persistent Toxicities to Diseases for the 2011 Annual Meeting. Another joint scientific session will be held at the SOT 51st Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in San Francisco. The GSLC Professional Development Subcommittee spearheads the development of the scientific sessions.
Graduate Student/Postdoctoral Mixer

Every year, the student events at the Annual Meeting kick off with the Student/Postdoc Mixer on Sunday evening. This event, hosted by the GSLC and coordinated by the Programming Subcommittee, is a great opportunity to begin networking right away, learn more about the different component groups of SOT, and discuss issues of interest or concern with other student and postdoctoral meeting attendees. The Mixer was a great success in Washington DC, with over 330 attendees, prizes, games, and more. Please plan to join us for this event in San Francisco in 2012. Tickets are FREE—Be sure to sign up when you register for the Annual Meeting!
Chat with an Expert
Another popular activity hosted by the GSLC (and coordinated by the GSLC Programming Subcommittee) is the Chat with an Expert (CWAE) program, formerly known as “Lunch with an Expert (LWAE).” This program provides student participants with a great opportunity to network and gain insights from seasoned toxicologists. The 2011 CWAE program was another great success, with 70 Experts volunteering to meet over 120 students during the Annual Meeting. We greatly appreciate and thank the Experts for their continuous support for the program. In 2011, the program was expanded to include “Chat (Lunch) with a Postdoc” and “Chat (Lunch) with a Graduate Student,” to provide more networking opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students. The new programs were small-scale successes and the GSLC will continue these complementary programs in an effort to aid in the communication between students, postdocs, and professionals in the field of toxicology. The organizers worked hard to match students, postdocs, and Experts and establish communication between them, and facilitate the event at the Annual Meeting. We hope to continue the success of this program in 2012, so please be sure sign up and take advantage of this great networking opportunity.

Volunteer Opportunities
There are many opportunities to get involved in the Annual Meeting as a Volunteer. Educational programs such as K–12 Outreach and the Undergraduate Education Program are always in need of enthusiastic assistance, and are a rewarding way to spread toxicology to potential scientists of tomorrow. The Continuing Education program relies on student volunteers to assist with the courses on-site, including taking entrance tickets and handing out course materials—In exchange, volunteers get to attend a course free of charge. SOT appreciates volunteers to assist on-site at the SOT Pavilion, or serving as Greeters in designated areas of the Convention Center. At the discretion of the Scientific Program Committee, graduate students and postdocs may also be invited to serve as Poster/Platform Session Chairs. Many of these opportunities fill on a first-come, first-serve basis, so act now! Become a volunteer.
Student Event Planner
Each year the GSLC creates a helpful reference document listing all Annual Meeting events of interest to students. The Student Event Planner is designed to help maneuver through the immense sea of activities that take place at the Annual Meeting, including SS, RC, and SIG events. It is especially useful for first time attendees, and the GSLC Communications Subcommittee coordinates the production of this document. Please refer to this helpful tool as you prepare to attend the upcoming Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The 2012 Student Event Planner will be available online before the Annual Meeting.
Webinars
The Postdoctoral Assembly has developed and presented several career development webinars including:
- From Graduate Student to Postdoc: Insight across Career Paths
- Toxicology Career Strategies for Early Career Professionals
- From Postdoc to Faculty: Climbing the Ladder of Academia.
These webinars are available online through the postdoc page of the SOT website. Stay tuned for new webinars coming from the GSLC and PDA, and plan to attend one live!
