Student Awards Frequently Asked Questions
The award program announcements and applications are all posted to
the SOT Web site. The quickest route to access the Awards information
is on the navigation bar to the left. Select “About SOT” then “Awards and Fellowships.”
Specific awards can be found on the drop down lists. You can search by
award criteria or by aphabetically listing.

Q.
I am (my advisor is) not currently a SOT member. Does that mean
I am not eligible?
A. If you (your advisor)
submit the application
for membership before the October 9 deadline, membership status will
be classified as "pending" and you will be considered eligible.
Even better, apply before the regular September 1 deadline!
Q. Does
my membership application have to be complete by October 9?
A. No. You must have submitted
your portion, but if a sponsor letter isn't in that will not disqualify
you. However, you must have completed your application by the time you
receive the award.
Q. Are there
restrictions as to the number of awards for which one student
can apply?
A. No, a student can apply for multiple national SOT, Specialty Section, Special Interest Group, and Regional Chapter awards as long as eligibility requirements for the individual awards or funding are met.
Q. Is there a limit to the number of awards a student may accept?
A. No, with the exception of funds from national SOT. The sponsoring group—SOT national, Regional Chapter, Special Interest Group, or Specialty Section—determines eligibility and whether a student may accept another award or funds. In order to provide funding to as many students as possible, SOT national will only provide one type of meeting-related travel support or award funds to a graduate student in any one year.
SOT national meeting-related funding includes the following:
- Graduate Student Travel Support
- Funding for interviews for SOT Graduate Fellowship-Novartis
- Perry J. Gehring Student Diversity Award
- Travel funding for SAC officers, Regional Chapter/Special Interest Group Graduate Committee, and Specialty Section Graduate Committee
- Syngenta Fellowship Award in Human Health Applications of New Technologies
Please note that Colgate-Palmolive Student Research Funding program does not provide travel funds for the meeting, so a student may receive this funding and one of the awards listed above from SOT in the same year.
Q. Do I need
an official transcript for my application?
A. No, a copy is
OK.
Graduate Student Travel
Q. In
the past, SOT has given student travel money to more than one
student at an institution. Will they do the same this year?
A. Yes. Do note that SOT
no longer requires that school representatives rank the list of applicants
for that institution. The number funded per institution is dependent upon
availability of funds and total number of applicants.
Q. How is
the Travel Support administered?
A. The student recipient
will receive a check for travel expenses. The student is responsible
for making his or her own registration, lodging and travel arrangements.
SOT treats this as a travel reimbursement rather than as a stipend.
Q. How much
is the Travel Support?
A. The amount is
about $700 per student. The amount varies from year to year depending
on number of qualified applicants and the total funds available.
Q. I am
a graduate student, but I do not live in the U.S.A. Am I eligible
for Graduate Travel Support?
A. Yes, you are.
Q. I once
participated in the SOT Undergraduate Minority Program and received
travel
support. Does that mean I am not eligible for Graduate Travel
Support?
A. No, the only
restriction is that a student may receive Graduate Travel Support
from SOT once. There is no connection with the Undergraduate
Award.
Q. I won
a Regional Chapter/Specialty Section/Special Interest Group travel award last year.
Does
that mean I am not eligible for the SOT Graduate Travel Support?
A. Regional Chapter, Specialty Section,
or Special Interest Group Awards from a previous year do not affect
eligibility for the SOT Graduate Travel Support.
Q. Does SOT offer
student travel funds throughout the year or only for the Annual
Meeting? If other funds are available, where are the applications?
A. SOT also offers support
for students to learn alternative research techniques through the Colgate-Palmolive
Awards for Student Research Training in Alternative Methods.
Deadlines are February 15, June 15, and October 9. Check the
Web sites of related
professional societies and organizations for travel funds that are
provided by other groups.
Q. I am a graduate student representative and member of a Graduate Committee (SS-GC, RC/SIG-GC, SAC). Can I accept an award in addition to my travel funding as a Graduate Committee representative?
A. That depends. If the award is from SOT national, then you MAY NOT accept both the awards funds and the GC travel funding. SOT policy dictates that you may receive funds from only one source through SOT national—You may decide which award/funding to accept. However, you MAY accept funds from as many Regional Chapter, Special Interest Group, or Specialty Section awards as you are eligible and selected to receive, according to their policies.
Q. I am an undergraduate
interested in toxicology. Do you have travel funds for which I
can apply?
A. You may be available for
a waiver of you registration fees or travel funds. More information is found on the Undergraduate Web page. Contact Betty

Q. I am a postdoctoral
fellow. Does SOT have funds to support my travel?
A. The Colgate-Palmolive
Postdoctoral Fellowship candidates are interviewed at the meeting and
receive travel support. Some Regional Chapters,
Specialty Sections, and Special Interest Groups provide travel awards for postdocs. Use "postdoctoral" as a criteria on the Awards page and review the resulting list.
